The scam begins when you receive an e-mail that appears to be from a legitimate source, with a seemingly justifiable request - possibly to verify your personal information or account details. Phishing is defined as: The act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft.
